The 2022 Golf GTI Hatchback has evolved through eight generations and now offers one of the most technologically advanced and responsive vehicles in the VW line-up.
Golf GTI features a 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injection, TSI engine that generates 241 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. The upgrade represents an increase of 13 HP and 15 pound-feet from its predecessor, making the 2022 model the most powerful GTI ever delivered.
Power is routed to the front wheels through a standard six-speed manual transmission or optional seven-speed dual clutch automatic. It is capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds.
Inside, the Golf GTI 2022 features two large displays mounted on the vehicle dashboard--a 10.3 inch gauge cluster and a 10.0-inch infotainment touchscreen.
The infotainment system is operated via touch-sensitive sliders synced with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity. A structured menu prevents the interface from appearing cloggy or confusing for the driver.
There is 19.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and an additional 34.5 cubic feet when the back seats are folded flat. Rear seats come with a fold-down "ski door" in the center which is handy for hauling skis and other long items without having to bend the back seats.
An additional stash space is located under the cargo floor for valuables such as a tablet, camera or briefcase. The large VW emblem on the lift gate, when lifted, doubles as a latch to gain access into the cargo hold.
The Golf GTI is equipped with VW's IQ.Drive suite of safety and driver-assisting technologies. It includes a pre-collision warning system with pedestrian and cyclist detection, forward automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance and active blind-spot warning.
New to the 2022 GTI is Travel Assist, which combines the speed-setting and vehicle-spacing functions of adaptive cruise control and the active steering assist of lane-keeping. Capacitive sensors in the steering wheel rim determine if a driver's hands are on the wheel.
