Tiguan Scores Highest Rating For Driving, Passenger Safety

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded Volkswagen’s Tiguan compact SUV as a Top Safety Pick+.

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan has received the Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

“TOP SAFETY PICK+” designation is based on “good” ratings in six crashworthiness tests. It also must earn no less than an “acceptable” rating for standard headlights and no less than an “advanced” rating for both front crash prevention tests.

The 2022 Tiguan earned good ratings in the six crashworthiness evaluations. Tiguan models come standard with LED headlights, with the addition of the Adaptive Front Lighting System with dynamic cornering lights on the top trim.

The lighting configurations both earn acceptable ratings. The Front Assist system receives a superior rating for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention and an advanced rating for vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention.

Driver-assist technologies

Volkswagen's IQ Drive driver-assist and safety features are standard for all Tiguan models. Rear Traffic Alert utilizes sensors dotted around the vehicle to detect when another car is in a driver's reverse path.

The system sets off an alert informing the driver to stop and automatically applies brakes if the car does not stop quickly.

Emergency Assist determines when a driver is no longer in control of the vehicle by gauging steering wheel activity. If the driver remains unresponsive, the system brings the car to a controlled stop.

Travel Assist is a hands-on semi-autonomous driving assistant that helps with steering, acceleration, braking and maintaining the car where lane markings are located. Drivers must keep their hands on the steering wheel for cameras and sensors to hold their current lane and maintain a steady distance from the vehicle in front.

IIHS Superior Rating

Front Assist System achieved a "superior" rating for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention and an "advanced" evaluation for vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention. The safety setup provides automatic braking assistance for drivers in frontal collisions with vehicles or pedestrians.

LED headlights are standard on all 2022 Tiguan models, with an Adaptive Front Lighting System with dynamic cornering lights restricted to top trims. The adaptive system adjusts illumination from headlamps according to vehicle speed and curves in the road for enhanced visibility.

IIHS is dedicated to reducing road deaths and injuries from vehicle crashes. The preventive program helps car users sort through a maze of safety technologies and choose the most user-friendly and effective systems.
