Volkswagen Tiguan Named Top Safety Pick

The Volkswagen Tiguan recently received top ratings in annual, independent tests of vehicle safety.

The Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Tiguan its “Top Safety Pick.” Volkswagen Tiguan has achieved the designation for mid-sized SUVs for the past three years in a row.

IIHS is an independent agency focused on reducing injuries and property damage from motor vehicle crashes.  It began annual evaluations for Top Safety Pick in the 2006 model year and introduced its Top Safety Pick+ in 2013.

IHS tested the 2021 Tiguan equipped with LED headlights and the Adaptive Front-lighting System with dynamic cornering headlights. The feature is standard on the SEL Premium R-Line trim.

The 2021 Tiguan earned the top rating of “good” in the six crashworthiness evaluations.

The Front Assist system models received the top designation of “superior” for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention and an “advanced” rating for vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention.

Volkswagen includes the Front Assist system as standard on all of its Tiguan models.

Volkswagen engineers have been at the forefront of crash-related technologies for occupant safety. The brand’s Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring helps warn drivers of potential frontal collisions with vehicles and pedestrians. In some situations, it also provides automatic braking assistance.

The Forward Collision Warning system helps warns the driver of potential critical front-end collision situations. When traveling over 18 MPH, Tiguan responds with audio and visual warnings. An automatic jolt of the brakes can warn the driver of impending danger.

Autonomous Emergency Braking to help slow the vehicle if the driver does not respond. The system helps detect a potential front-end collision through Autonomous Emergency Braking.

Other Volkswagen driver safety technology on the 2021 Tiguan include Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert. Several safety upgrades are available such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping System, Park Distance Control, High Beam Control and Overhead View Camera.

Among the standard safety features included with Tiguan 2021 are:

  • Front Assist system for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention and vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention.
  • Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert.
  • Passive and active safety systems including six airbags.
  • Anti-lock Braking System.
  • Electronic Stability Control.
  • Automatic Post-Collision Braking System.
