Volkswagen's 2024 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport secured "Top Safety Picks+" titles from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Laurels were given to both vehicles as a validation for their exceptional safety credentials. It is the first TSP+ award to be given to an Atlas vehicle.

VW equipped both models with a standard front crash prevention system, which earned advanced ratings in daytime and nocturnal pedestrian crash avoidance tests.

Headlight technology for both cars also achieved good ratings. The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models are equipped with advanced IQ Drive driver-assistance features.

The assistance technology uses radar, cameras and several ultrasound sensors to warn drivers of potential hazards and protect occupants in collisions.

Among the features offered by Volkswagen’s safety system :

  • Forward Collision Warning monitors distance between the Atlas and other vehicles. It warns the driver when the Atlas gets too close and automatically applies brakes to prevent an accident.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control automatically adjusts vehicle’s speed and maintains a safe distance from the preceding car. ACC uses sensors to measure distance ahead and communicates it to the engine to adjust speed accordingly.
  • Active Side Assist uses sensors to detect vehicles in blind spots. Technology alerts drivers of the presence of other cars when changing lanes or merging with a highway.

Optional features for a safe and secure winter driving include Park Distance Control, Dynamic Road Sign Display, Parking Steering Assistant and High Beam Control for headlights.

The Top Safety Pick+ is an honor conferred on vehicles that excel in crash tests and other safety evaluations. To earn a TSP+, a vehicle must meet the following criteria:

  • Good ratings in all six crash tests, including head restraints and seats test, side impact test and roof strength test.
  • An advanced or superior rating in frontal crash prevention, vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian appraisals.
  • Acceptable or good rating for headlight performance

IHHS made some requirements more rigorous to achieve Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+. Fundamental changes include a different side impact crash test, new headlight requirements and more demanding assessment of automatic emergency braking systems.

By making it more difficult to earn these distinctions, the IIHS aims to encourage automakers to keep on improving the safety of their vehicles in a variety of crash scenarios.
